This Month
Before embarking on his final season as CBSO Music Director, Sakari Oramo flicks through the season brochure with Tommy Pearson and talks about his programmes for the year ? including the Sibelius cycle, IgorFest concerts, more Elgar, Mahler 5 and Beethoven?s 9th Symphony.
In Talking Programme notes, Stephen Johnson takes a look at Mahler?s Songs of a Wayfarer, ahead of a concert in October at Symphony Hall when Sarah Connolly will be the soloist, conducted by Ilan Volkov.
And the PodGuide to the Orchestra returns after a summer break. This month it?s the clarinets, with Jo Patton and Mark O?Brien talking about an instrument that?s easy to pick up and play, but tricky to master. They also talk about the horror of playing one of the most famous clarinet solos in the repertoire ? at the opening of Gerhswin?s Rhapsody in Blue.
Competition
In this month?s competition there?s a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Ilan Volkov concerts on 18th/20th October at Symphony Hall in Birmingham: as well as Sarah Connolly singing Mahler?s Songs of a Wayfarer, there?s also Schumann?s 4th Symphony and Mendelssohn?s incidental music to A Midsummer Night?s Dream.
Just answer this question :
What?s the name of the 1971 film, starring Dirk Bogarde, that is famous for featuring the Adagietto from Mahler?s 5th Symphony?
Answers to the usual email address ? podcast@cbso.co.uk

The winner of last month?s competition, who wins a pair of tickets to Sakari Oramo?s concert of Respighi, Smetana and Dvorak on the 2nd October is Simon Harrington from Bridgnorth in Shropshire. Mr Harrington answered correctly the question : ?Which string quartet did Laurence Jackson lead before joining the CBSO? ? answer, The Maggini Quartet
